Weekly number of coronaviru­s deaths falls for first time in 2021

THE number of weekly registered deaths involving coronaviru­s in England and Wales has fallen for the first time since Christmas, new data shows.

There were 7,320 deaths registered in the week ending February 5 where “novel coronaviru­s” was mentioned on the death certificat­e, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. This is a fall of 1,113 deaths (13.1%) compared with the previous week.

The last time deaths fell was the week ending December 25, which included one bank holiday.

The Government said a further 799 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of yesterday, bringing the UK total using that measure to 118,195.

The Government also said that, as of 9am yesterday, there had been a further 10,625 lab-confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in the UK, bringing the total number in the UK to 4,058,468.
