Over-development? But all are being sold

-

I SEE that an excessive number of homes are being built in Devon. Similar concerns are expressed in Cornwall. I saw a huge development near Newquay under construction last year, right on top of a hill and an eyesore viewed from miles around.

Hundreds of homes are springing up around St Austell. Thankfully not in sight from sea, beaches or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The other thing I note that, while some regard these as excessive development, all appear to be sold.

Many local businesses and others will welcome these developments. The new owners will mostly furnish them locally, new TVs and radios will be bought. Thousands will be spent on carpets and curtains, chairs, settees, dining room furniture, cutlery... not to mention garden plants, outdoor furniture, maybe a barbecue, even a little pool.

Restaurant meals will be bought, and groceries. Plus, of course, council tax will be payable, as well as water charges, etc. More school teachers needed. NHS services will be stretched for a while but we can still import NHS staff from around the world, and as we no longer contribute to EU coffers we can afford it.

Finally, only this evening a friend explained that the housing market locally is extremely brisk. Recently an estate agent rang my friend with a suitable property and a viewing was arranged for the following weekend.

Later the same day there was a further call to say ‘sorry’, but the property had been sold.
