Scone too far... Julia gets reprimand from Dawn for ‘cream first’ gaffe

ACTRESS Dawn French has once again reignited the jam and cream debate – calling out TV presenter Julie Bradbury over her recent scone blunder.

It came after Bradbury made the unforgivable move on a recent episode of Devon and Cornwall Walks where she – and on Cornish soil, no less – opted to eat a scone with cream on first.

The Irish-born presenter has been documenting life along the coast on ITV’s Cornwall and Devon Walks with Julia Bradbury this year, exploring the region in an eight-part series – all by foot.

Some people on Twitter have condemned her for eating the scone the Devonian way in a recent episode, after Cornwall resident and actor Dawn chimed in to give the presenter a polite reminder about how things should be done in the Duchy.

Tweeting a simple picture of a frame with the embroidered words ‘Jam first. No exceptions’, the Vicar of Dibley star said: “With respect, @ JuliaBradbury may I remind you of this...”

It came after Julia explained that the Cornish way is to put the jam on first, but despite this she still opted to spread her cream because “it’s like butter” and said either way it “tastes the same”.

“The perfect way to end this Cornish walk is of course a Cornish afternoon tea,” she said.

“There is probably nothing more famous than these little babies – the scones with the clotted cream. But is it the cream first, and then the jam? Or is it the jam and then the cream?”

She continued: “Well, in Cornwall it’s most definitely the jam first. However, I’m Greek, so I’m going to go the other way because to me cream is like butter.”

One user then asked what the “statute for punishments” would be for Julia’s behaviour, saying it was a “brazen” move to go with cream first whilst in Cornwall.

Another said: “You wouldn’t put cream in your bowl of strawberries first would you.”

“Effectively that is simply horrible @JuliaBradbury has gone #creamfirst on her scone and he or she was in #Cornwall Everyone knows that @ Jam_First is the correct manner!” added another.

Cornwall-based comedian Colin Leggo even made a hilarious sea shanty about the blunder which has been shared thousands of times on Facebook.

But not everyone was on Cornwall’s side. Some people joined the argument to say they agree and actually treat the cream like butter and spread it on first, much to Dawn’s horror.

However, all is not lost as it seems once again Cornwall has won the great scone debate, as Julia replied to Dawn admitting that the Cornish way “makes sense”.

Julia, who has a Greek mother, tweeted: “Dawn, as a local and an expert I bow to your expertise.

“The most compelling argument I’ve heard is that the jam goes on first to ‘protect’ the cream from curdling when the scones are hot. Now, that makes sense.”
