Strip them of ‘Duke and Duchess’ too?

-

I took your headline (WMN Saturday Feb 20)- “Harry and Meghan are stripped of Royal titles” – literally, to mean that they were no longer Duke and Duchess, yet they retain those titles.

They no longer have positions with various military, artistic, Commonwealth and sporting organisations but are still entitled to be called Duke and Duchess. Should they be, and in particular should she?

The title always sat ill on a divorced former US minor actress and ‘sleb’. And now that Harry has joined her in ‘slebdom’ (e.g. TV interviews with Oprah Winfrey), and that they have turned their backs on the UK for economic and personal reasons – to live permanently in Meghan’s home state of California – perhaps they should become ordinary citizens like most of us.

Harry’s great-uncle, also married to an American divorcee, who also quit royal duties for selfish reasons and was justifiably criticised for doing so, did indeed retain his title, but in today’s more egalitarian world is this a precedent to be followed?
