What’s happened to our wartime spirit?

-

WE appear to be living in a nanny state where people have lost the ability to make their own decisions, take responsibility for themselves and readily blame others for their own inadequacies.

I am fed up with letters in the paper criticising the Government’s handling of this pandemic, like the one in the other day saying we must have a national and a local enquiry. More money wasted that could be used in the NHS to far better effect.

Yes, mistakes have been made, obvious now with hindsight, but whatever the Government did was done with the best intentions to keep the economy ticking over, people in jobs and prevent the spread of the virus. It was impossible to please everybody, and whatever was done was bound to upset somebody.

I hope the people now complaining are doing their part by observing the advice given by the Government for their own good, only going out when necessary, wearing masks, and frequently washing their hands. If not, they have no right to complain.

There is plenty of evidence to show that many are not doing this. We need to have a return of the wartime spirit that Britain was once famous for. Make no mistake, this is a war, but one of a different kind, and one in which we can’t even see the enemy.

Finally, a big thank you to all those risking their own lives to look after us all, particularly the NHS staff in our hospitals.
