Seymour ecstatic as first league goal is the winner

BEN Seymour was left feeling ecstatic after his first league goal secured all three points for Exeter City after a 2-1 win at Colchester United.

The 21-year-old had suffered disappointed in his last two starts when he was subbed before half-time for tactical reasons against Morecambe and due to two red cards City picked up at Newport County.

But in the absence of Ryan Bowman through suspension, Seymour grabbed his chance at the third time of asking and his headed home just after the hour to make it three wins in four for the Grecians as they rise to sixth in the League Two table.

The academy product had scored twice in the EFL trophy this season, but it was his first league goal for the Grecians, and he said that City are hitting form at just the right time.

“I’m so proud and there’s no better feeling than putting the ball in the back of the net,” Seymour said.

“It has been tough this season but when it bristled the net, I loved that feeling, and so proud it was the winner and got us the three points.

“We are hitting form at the right time and when pitches get better, we can show how we can play, but we are grinding out results.

“I am thankful for Matt (Taylor) for giving me the chance and hope I have done well enough to keep the spot, but we got the three points to keep moving up the table and to the promotion places. I thought, I need to take my chance, and what a feeling when it hit the back of the net.”

Robbie Willmott’s first Grecians goal had given City the lead on the 27 minutes, turning in a Josh Key cross, and the full-back was again the provider for Seymour’s goal, floating in a ball that the 21-year-old headed home at the near post.

And he said that having come through the youth system with Key, he knew exactly where his fellow academy product was going to put the cross before he delivered it.

“It has been great growing up with the boys and I knew when he took the touch he would deliver it into that place and I put it onto my head and what a feeling it was,” he added.

“The win and put us in good stead for the rest of the season and we are taking the opportunity when the manager has faith in us.”

Manager Taylor was also delighted with the win adding: “We deserved to win that game and deserved to win by a bigger margin.

“I was really pleased with that performance on a difficult surface, we looked like we had a threat about us and were strong when we needed to be strong, and their goal came out of nothing if I’m being brutally honest.

“We have to find a way of being effective on these pitches and even without Ryan (Bowman), we found a way.

“We were comfortable at 2-0 and the goal gave them something to believe in, but Jokull not had a save to make and I thought we deserved to win, and if we didn’t come out with three points, I would have been bitterly disappointed as we deserved it.”

Taylor said that Seymour’s goal capped an impressive 90 minutes from the 21-year-old.

“The goal is a reward for the performance and he put himself about, he worked the backline and the goal was the reward for his constant effort and endeavour,” Taylor said.

“We may have freshen up and change again this weekend but he has a goal to his name and I hope it is a foundation for him to build on.

“It was another really positive night for the club and we had five academy players in the starting line-up.”
