Nice weather for ducks! Somerset’s hopes hit by the rain in Taunton

-

NO PLAY was possible on the opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match between Somerset and Surrey at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, writes Richard Latham.

Overnight storms left parts of the outfield under water and more persistent rain during the morning hindered mopping up operations.

Umpires Nick Cook and Russell Warren waited until just before 2.30pm to decide there was no prospect of conditions being fit for play.

So wet is the outfield that, with the forecast for even more rain, prospects for a prompt start today already look doubtful, while the forecast for the weekend does not look much better.

Second-placed Somerset are hoping to close the gap on Group Two leaders Gloucestershire, which currently stands at 13 points, while Surrey desperately need a win to boost their chances of a top two finish.
