Second death on railway in just a week

-

A SECOND person has died in less than a week on the main railway line in the Westcountry.

In the latest incident a person died after being hit by a train between Plymouth and Liskeard yesterday afternoon.

Officers from British Transport Police were called following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

A spokesperson confirmed that a person was pronounced dead at the scene. All lines were closed in the area to allow emergency services to safely carry out the necessary operations.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police added: “Officers are working to identify the person and inform their next of kin. This incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

The latest death comes after schoolboy Oliver Baker, 15, died on the railway line at Ivybridge on Thursday last week. Oliver’s family yesterday paid tribute to the boy, who was found dead on the track on November 3.

His mother said: “Oliver was an incredibly loving and caring son, big brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and best friend to so many.

“Oliver had such a bright future ahead of him, with a promising rugby career and a life-long dream of joining the army. He loved going to the local gym and coaching the children’s rugby team. He would help anyone in a heartbeat.”
