Cornish fatstock show gearing up for grand return
ONE of, if not the, oldest primestock shows in Cornwall is set to make its return this weekend after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic.
Marking 150 years since its inception, the annual Helston Fatstock Show will be taking place at Franchis Farm this Saturday, November 12.
The popular event, held just outside of Helston on Redruth Road, is free for everyone to enter and will be raising money for St Petrocs, which aims to end homelessness in Cornwall and has been chosen as the charity to benefit from the proceeds of the show’s auction and raffle by this year’s president, Lady St Levan.
Alison Grose, in her first year as secretary of the Helston Fatstock Show, said entries are “looking good” and organisers are hoping that this year’s long-awaited renewal will be the “biggest one yet”.
“After a three-year break we are really looking forward to seeing the show get back to its best. The show has cattle and sheep classes, farm produce, fruit and vegetables, cookery, handicrafts, photography, eggs and children’s classes all under one roof.
“Besides the showing there is also a craft market with 40 stalls, perfect for anyone who wants to get that unique
Christmas present or something for themselves. And the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association’s trailer will be on site for children to learn about farming and meet the animals close up.”
One of four primestock shows in Cornwall, Helston follows on from the Liskeard Primestock Show which took place last month and comes ahead of the Cornish Winter Fair (Wadebridge Primestock Show) on November 19 and the Truro Primestock Show on December 7.
