Argyle left counting the cost of injuries

PLYMOUTH Argyle are counting the cost of injuries to Conor Grant and Dan Scarr during the 5-1 FA Cup first round defeat at Grimsby Town.

Grant suffered a torn thigh muscle when he tried a shot and will be out of action for between three and four months, according to Pilgrims’ boss Steven Schumacher.

It looks likely the 27-year-old will need surgery, only six months after he had a groin operation at the end of last season.

Scarr, meanwhile, is set to be sidelined for four to six weeks - taking him up to Christmas - after picking up a thigh strain against Grimsby.

Schumacher explained the injury to Grant was ‘pretty similar’ to the one suffered by summer signing Mickel Miller in the final training session before the League One campaign began at the end of July.

Miller has yet to make his comeback, although he is getting close to finally making his first appearance for the Pilgrims.

Schumacher said: “Conor tore his thigh striking the ball, pretty similar to what Mickel Miller did. He’s probably going to need surgery on it.

“He has got to see a specialist today (Thursday) to determine whether he does need surgery but the early indication is he’s probably going to, and that’s going to mean 12 to 16 weeks.”

Schumacher added: “I spoke to him last night (at Argyle’s FA Youth Cup first round tie against Cheltenham Town at Home Park) and he seemed as though he was in okay enough spirits.

“It’s one of those things that you can’t really dwell on it. Once you get that sort of diagnosis then you have got to just focus on your rehab and recovery as best as you can.

“It’s a blow for him because he has only just got back from an operation on his groin in the summer. It’s part and parcel of being a footballer, sometimes it throws curveballs at you and you have got to learn to deal with them.”

Grant was making only his third start for Argyle this season against Grimsby after recovering from his summer surgery.

Scarr had been an ever present in League One this season until he had to serve a three-match suspension after he was sent-off in the 3-0 home win against Accrington Stanley on October 8.

He returned to the team for the 4-2 Devon derby victory over Exeter City on October 31 and then started the FA Cup tie at Grimsby.

On the injury to Scarr, Schumacher said: “It’s a strain, so it’s not as serious but it’s still going to take a few weeks to fully recover. It might have been something he picked up in a previous game and didn’t know was there.”
