Floods cause road and rail chaos

-

FLOODING caused chaos on road and rail networks after heavy rain affected large parts of the UK. The Met Office issued weather alerts as a band of rain travelled across the country before passing over Scotland’s east coast today.

Conditions may be “atrocious” for much of the UK, while the Scottish Highlands could see some snow, the forecaster said, as it put out a yellow warning for rain.

The M23 was closed near Crawley in West Sussex, due to standing water on the carriageway in the early hours of yesterday. The road reopened after several hours, but some lanes stayed closed.

The A27 was closed in both directions between Emsworth and Chichester after heavy rain left up to 20 cars stuck in flood water, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said yesterday.

Some rail lines were affected, with disruption between Tonbridge and Hastings caused by flooding in a tunnel at Wadhurst, in East Sussex.

The Environment Agency also issued 27 flood warnings and 104 flood alerts yesterday morning.
