HOTEL OF THE WEEK

- By Beren Cross

Liverpool WHERE AND WHY

Malmaison’s boutique city centre hotel in Liverpool is ideally situated on the banks of the River Mersey. The hotel is chic, modern and the charcoal grey exterior makes it stand out on the waterfront.

An enormous yellow submarine suspended in the centre of the building is quite the welcome, especially for curious children, and a nod to Liverpool’s Fab Four.

The sleek theme is carried on into the bedrooms, where champagne and chocolate treats complemented fashionable furnishings.

The en suite came with a large, deep bath, a separate walk-in shower and an enormous washbasin.

ON THE MENU

Chez Mal is the brasserie on the hotel’s ground floor. Exposed brickwork, unique artwork, high ceilings and glass-fronted wine racks give the restaurant a high-end feel.

The maitre d’ made our young family feel very welcome and the food was magnificent. We can highly praise the chicken karaage starter (£8.50) as well as the fillet steak main (£34.50).

Starters cost from £5.50, mains from £10.50 and desserts from £6.50. There is also a bar next door for laid-back bar food.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

The regenerated docklands are sure to draw you outdoors to explore. You can see cruise ships coming up the Mersey from your bedroom window.

The Royal Liver Building, Titanic Memorial, Museum of Liverpool, Tate Liverpool and Royal Albert Dock, are on the doorstep.
