FORMER Plymouth Argyle youngster Alex Fletcher is out of intensive care following the horror injury he suffered whilst playing football – and he has issued a heartwarming statement for the many messages of love and support he has received since the event.

The 23-year-old striker, who hails from Newton Abbot, was playing for Bath City in a National League South match against Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday, November 8 when, just five minutes into the game, he collided head first at high speed with an advertising hoarding.

The match was then abandoned, after Fletcher was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency neurosurgery to stabilise his condition before being admitted to intensive care, where he has been ever since. However, the Romans yesterday issued a statement on behalf of Fletcher, who confirmed he is now out of intensive care.

“Thank you all so much for your kindness, generosity and messages of goodwill that you have sent to me through what has been the most challenging period of my life,” Fletcher said,

“I am now off the intensive care unit and continuing my recovery on the neurosurgery ward assisted by the wonderful staff and nurses here.

“I want to say a special thank you to all those that have been looking after me and my family and to everyone who has contributed to the GofundMe page, which will help me get back to doing what I love to do as soon as possible.

“It will be a long road to recovery but I will draw on all the love and support that everyone has shown, every step of the way.

“I look forward to seeing you all in the future but in the meantime, Up the Romans.”

Alex’s family and fiancé added: “We are all very relieved and so happy that Alex is now out of intensive care and heading in the right direction. We echo his words in thanking everyone who has shown so much love, goodwill and support towards us all and are convinced that this has helped in his recovery immensely.

“We too thank everyone for the support shown to Alex, his family and the club thus far. Our supporters have been amazing and we know that you’ll all be with us, side by side with Fletch, during his recovery.”

Fletcher came through the Academy at Argyle and went on to make 25 appearances for the first team, scoring three goals. He spent a short time on loan at Aldershot and Torquay before his release in 2020 when he joined Tiverton Town before them moving on to Bath.

Last season, Fletcher was named as their player of the year after scoring 19 goals.

The fundraising page was set up in the immediate aftermath of his horror injury, to support both Fletcher and his family, and was close to
