ASOUTH Devon primestock show is gearing up to celebrate its 100th anniversary next week.

The Newton Abbot Christmas Show Society will mark the centenary with a busy schedule of classes and prizes at Higher Humber Farm on Monday, November 28.

Held near Bishopsteignton by kind permission of Geoff and Joe Lang, the traditional showcase of agricultural production is one of five in the locality and part of a points competition designed to encourage livestock exhibitors to enter as many classes as possible.

Cattle and sheep farmers who attended the Plympton Primestock Show and the Churston Fatstock Show will already have precious points under their belts and there are more up for grabs at the Newton Abbot Christmas Show, which is then followed by the Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke Christmas Show on Tuesday, December 6 and the Dartmouth Fatstock Show on Tuesday, December 13.

The final presentation will be made at the last show of the season, Dartmouth, with cash prizes of £200 and £100 for the winning cattle and sheep exhibitors, respectively.

Jonathan Bell, secretary of the Newton Abbot Christmas Show Society, explained that the notfor-profit event is promoted for the purpose of “benefiting the community in encouraging the breeding of livestock and the production of high quality agricultural produce”.

He added: “It is our centenary year so we would like as many people to attend as possible, and the entries are looking very strong. We’ve received over 300

entries across all the sections.”

Away from the livestock, there will be classes for roots, cereals, apples and vegetables, baking and preserves, eggs, floral art and handicrafts.

Children and members of the local Young Farmers’ Clubs are also invited to show off their baking, crafting and photography skills.

Getting underway from 10am, the Newton Abbot Christmas Show will be held at Higher Humber Farm, Bishopsteignton, Teignmouth, TQ14 9TD.
