77,000 motorists caught speeding

THE Westcountr­y has been named the eighth highest area in the UK for speeding motorists.

Drivers in Devon and Cornwall committed more than 77,000 speeding offences in the last year.

The study, conducted by car finance and loan company Moneybarn, revealed the figures after analysing the number of speeding offences in each police force area from the last 12 months.

West Yorkshire was first in the rankings, closely followed by Greater Manchester and Lincolnshi­re.

Devon and Cornwall, with a population of 1,785,300, recorded a total of 77,387 speeding offences over the 12 month period.

Bristol was found to have the highest number of people searching for speed awareness courses in the country, whereas Dorset had the lowest number of speed awareness course searches.

West Yorkshire recorded the most speeding offences in the country, with 180,432 offences committed in the last year, in an area with a population of over two million. Per 100,000 people, an average of eight committed a speeding offence in 12 months.

Greater Manchester followed closely behind, with 178,123 speeding offences.
