Workers deserve to have rights protected
PRIVATISING the assets of the nation has never worked. When it’s a battle between profit and service, it’s a no contest. This has been personified by the recent Royal Mail dispute. The firm has paid out over £2 billion to shareholders but pleads poverty when it comes to giving its employees a living wage. Yet, like all the privatised utilities and services, the overpaid bosses manage to receive their obscene bonuses.
The dispute is not just about low pay. The attacks on the basic terms and conditions of work shame the nation. Remember the assurances from Brexiteers that leaving the EU would not result in a bonfire of workers’ rights protected by EU law?
