Any of these hybrids makes a realistic alternative to a regular diesel. If you keep their batteries topped up and do lots of short trips, your fuel bills could be next to nothing. Even on longer journeys, they’re more economical than you might think, and they make cheap company cars.

The comfortable, wellequipped and re ned XC90 is our winner, though. It’s the most complete car overall and, crucially, is much more practical than its rivals – which end up tied for stars.

The Cayenne may not be as practical as the XC90, but it pips the Range Rover Sport on that front, and it’s the obvious choice for keen drivers. It’ll be the cheapest to run, too.therefore, it gets the nod over the Range Rover Sport, which, while having the poshest interior, falls short of its rivals in enough areas – including reliability, according to our latest survey – to relegate it to third place. It remains a very likeable car, though.
