A few years ago, the idea that a small Peugeot SUV could go toe-to-toe with the equivalent from Audi would have been fanciful, but the new 2008, with its lengthy standard equipment list, visually appealing interior and peppy, economical engine, can unquestionably do just that.

Having said that, the Q2 still has what it takes to fend off its bold new rival. Its interior may not be as ashy as the 2008’s, but it feels slightly classier and better built, while its infotainment system is far more user-friendly. Factor in the fact that it’s also sharper to drive and has a better driving position and the Q2 is a deserving winner.

There’s a little more leg room front and rear in the 2008, but a high window line, narrow interior and sloping roof make it feel more cramped than the Q2.wide door sills also mean it’s quite tricky to climb and out of the rear seats
