ELECTRIC SUVS ARE launching thick and fast these days, but few have as much hype surrounding them as the Volkswagen ID 4. It’s the second model to come from Volkswagen’s Id-badged range of electric vehicles, following on from the ID 3 family hatchback.what Car? readers are clearly interested in that car – our early drive in a prototype version is consistently among the most-read rst drives on whatcar.com – and the same wave of expectation is likely to precede the ID 4.

The ID 4 started life as the ID Crozz concept car, rst shown in 2017, and has retained many of that car’s styling features on its journey to production.

Initially, the ID 4 will be offered with a single 201bhp electric motor and with a range of up to 311 miles. Its range is close to that of the larger Tesla Model X, which can cover up to 314 miles between charges, according to of cial WLTP tests, but the upcoming Ford Mustang Mach-e is expected to beat both, with a range of up to 370 miles.

A more powerful version of the ID 4 with four-wheel drive and up to 302bhp from dual electric motors is expected to follow within a year of launch. Just like the ID 3, the ID 4 is strongly tipped to be sold with a choice of different-sized batteries.

Although Volkswagen has yet to show the ID 4’s interior, we’re expecting to see a similar design to that of the ID 3, with very few buttons, a large central infotainment screen and a digital instrument panel in place of conventional dials.

The ID 4 is highly likely to have interior space on a par with the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, but it won’t have seating for seven. Instead, a larger electric SUV, previewed by the ID Roomzz concept car, will come later on.

Prices won’t be announced until closer to the ID 4’s rst appearance in showrooms. However, a starting price of close to £40,000 is likely.
