IN A WAY, it’s odd that DS hasn’t had a luxury saloon in its range until now.you see, the rst car to wear a DS badge all the way back in 1955 was just that: a sleek car with sci- looks and clever hydropneumatic suspension that gave a super-smooth ride. With the launch of the DS 9 saloon, then, the brand is returning to its luxury roots.

With dimensions that make it about the same size as rivals such as the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series, the DS 9 is heavily based on the Peugeot 508 executive car underneath, but it features lots of chrome trim, a big front grille and bold LED headlights in a bid to move it farther upmarket.

At launch, you’ll be able to buy the DS 9 only as a plug-in hybrid, with a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor producing a combined 222bhp. Of cially, it can travel for up to 31 miles on electric power alone, and DS says the 11.9kwh battery can be recharged in just 90 minutes from home or public charging points.

In time, a more powerful 247bhp plug-in hybrid model with a longer electric range will join the line-up, followed by a rangetopping version with 355bhp and fourwheel drive. For buyers who don’t want hybrid power, a 222bhp petrol version will be offered as well.

The DS 9 features adaptive suspension that scans the road ahead and prepares each wheel with the optimum comfort setting, with the aim of giving you a comfortable ride. Other features include
