TARGET PRICE

The What Car? Target Price is the maximum you should pay for a new car and is set by our mystery shoppers. It’s updated each month and our approved dealers guarantee to match it. However, in a lot of cases, they can save you even more: just visit whatcar.com/new-car-deals or call 03302 216207 between 9am and 5pm (standard network fees apply). All Target Prices are correct at the time of going to press.

TARGET PCP

The Target PCP is a fair monthly fee if you’re taking out a personal contract purchase (PCP) nance deal, also set by our mystery shoppers. Most are over 48 months with a 15% deposit and an 8000-mile annual limit.those marked with an asterisk are over 36 months and those with an apostrophe are over 42 months. Ford deals are over 9000 miles, while those for Honda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Skoda and Volkswagen are over 10,000 miles.

TRUE MPG

What Car?’s True MPG gures show the fuel economy you can really expect.the test is done in a laboratory to ensure repeatability within 1% but is based on a real-world route that takes in urban, rural and motorway driving. It’s tightly controlled: climate control is set to 21deg C and cars due to be tested are stored overnight at 23deg C so that each starts with the same engine temperature. True MPG gures re ect what’s achievable if you drive gently and stick to speed limits but don’t resort to unrealistically slow acceleration or special ‘hypermiling’ techniques.

REAL RANGE

What Car?’s Real Range test shows how far an electric car can really drive on a single charge. The car is driven at our test centre until its battery is at, then we fully charge it (measuring the energy required to do so) and soak it overnight to 18deg C.then, with the lights and air conditioning on, two people inside and the outside air between 10 and 15deg C, we drive our 19.4-mile route, which simulates a mix of urban, rural and motorway driving. It’s driven twice for cars that require more than 60kwh to charge and three times for those that require more than 100kwh.

VERDICT

Our road test reviews are the standard by which the car industry judges new cars.

PERFORMANCE FIGURES The quoted power, torque, top speed and 0-62mph gures are of cial manufacturer numbers.

GOV’T MPG, GOV’T RANGE

Quoted MPG gures are maximum combined values derived from the of cial WLTP tests.the of cial range gures quoted for electric cars are also based on WLTP tests.

CO2 G/KM The amount of CO2 emitted is used to nd the rate of rst-year VED and company car (bene tin-kind) tax. Quoted CO2 values are from the of cial WLTP test. VEHICLE EXCISE DUTY

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), or road tax, is calculated on a scale according to CO2 output for year one and operates on a at rate thereafter. Hybrids get a £10 discount on the rst-year rate and the at rate. Electric cars pay no VED. Petrol, diesel and hybrid cars costing more than £40,000 (list price, including options, and regardless of dealers’ discounts) pay an extra £325 tax annually for ve years from the second year.

BENEFIT-IN-KIND TAX

Bene t-in-kind (BIK) tax bills for company cars are calculated by multiplying the P11D value (list price, delivery cost, vat and any options but not VED or registration fees) of the car by the percentage dictated by its CO2 emissions.this is then multiplied by your income tax band of 20%, 40% or 45% in England, wales and Northern Ireland or 19%, 20%, 21%, 41% or 46% in Scotland. We quote prices for a 40% taxpayer as a guide.

Diesels attract 4% higher BIK than petrols, except those that are Rde2-compliant. Electric cars incur a 1% rate in 2021-2022; hybrids are given different rates depending on their of cial electric-only range. The BIK scale alters each April.
