MANY ELECTRIC SUVS carry premium price tags, both new and used. Not the MG ZS EV, though. this car is really in a class of its own, offering buyers a well-equipped, emissions-free small SUV for tempting second-hand prices.
Around £18,000 will get you an excellent two-yearold example with a low mileage, and you won’t pay much more than that for a car that’s just a year old.
What’s more, even entrylevel Excite models come with plenty of kit, such as 17in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and an 8.0in infotainment screen featuring Android Auto and Apple Carplay phone mirroring. Important safety tech, such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance, is present, too. Higher-spec Exclusive cars include a panoramic glass roof and leather seats that are heated in the front.
There’s only one power option: a 141bhp electric motor. It allows the ZS EV to accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.5sec, making it quicker than the petrol ZS. A 45kwh battery gives an official range of 163 miles, which is good enough for everyday use, although it means the ZS EV isn’t as suitable for long trips as pricier rivals such as the Kia e-niro.
The interior has some soft-touch plastics on its dashboard, as well as solid-feeling buttons and switches. In addition, the ZS EV offers plenty of room for occupants and luggage, with a larger boot than you’ll find in some rivals.the ability to adjust the height of the boot floor (with storage space underneath for cables) is handy, too.
The only other electric cars you can buy for similar money to the ZS EV are hatchbacks such as the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe, and neither of them is as practical or spacious inside. In terms of value for money in this price bracket, the ZS EV is nigh on impossible to beat.
