ESTATE CAR SUMMER 2024 BMW i5 Touring The versatile sister to BMW’S posh electric saloon promises 570 litres of boot space – or 1700 litres if you fold the seats down. Motors and batteries are shared with the saloon; the entry-level edrive40 has 335bhp and an official range of up to 344 miles. Petrol versions will follow, including a plug-in hybrid with a 60-mile official electric range. Price from £69,800

SMALL/FAMILY CARS

Alpine A290 Late 2024 Sports car specialist goes mainstream with a hot hatch partner to the reborn Renault 5, potentiall­y with as much as 268bhp. That makes the A290 a formidable foe for the Abarth 500e and Cupra Born.

EXECUTIVE CAR

Nio ET5

If you miss that radio-controlled car you had as a kid, this BMW i4 rival will be right up your street; when its battery runs flat, you’ll be able to swap it for a fresh one. This is assuming Nio’s promised battery swap stations materialis­e. Expect four-wheel drive, with two electric motors (201bhp front, 282bhp rear), and an official range of up to 348 miles. Price from £58,000 (est)

Renault 5 Early 2025 The A290’s sensible sibling will offer an official range of up to 249 miles, and in keeping with its historic namesake, affordabil­ity will be key; a starting price of about £25,000 will make it one of the cheapest electric cars on sale.

EXECUTIVE AND LUXURY CARS

Audi A6 Avant e-tron Late 2024 Posh estate will be the first all-electric A6, with up to 435 miles of range. Sharing tech with the Porsche Macan, it’ll also sire a successor to the RS6 performanc­e estate, perhaps with more than 600bhp.

Volkswagen Passat Summer 2024 To be offered only as an estate in its next generation, the practical Passat gets even more interior space, plus a big injection of infotainme­nt and driver assistance tech. The plug-in hybrid promises a 62-mile electric range and a low company car tax rating.

Rolls-royce Spectre Spring 2024 Ultra-luxurious battery-powered conveyance promises 323 miles of near-silent motoring from a 102kwh (usable) battery. Two electric motors provide a total of 577bhp, but the emphasis is on effortless performanc­e rather than anything as uncouth as drag racing.

COUPÉS, SPORTS AND PERFORMANC­E CARS

Fisker Ronin Late 2024 It’s likely to be priced to compete with the electric Porsche Macan SUV, but as an electric convertibl­e sports car with a folding metal roof, the Ronin is an entirely different propositio­n. A 660-mile range is promised, as is a 0-60mph time of less than 2.0sec.

Lotus Emeya Late 2024 Packs the same 905bhp electric punch as the Eletre SUV but has a sleek saloon body.

MG Cyberster Summer 2024 First all-new MG convertibl­e since the 1995 MGF has four times the power (536bhp) and an official range of up to 300 miles.

Porsche Panamera Spring 2024 Rapid five-door continent-crosser is all-new and sticks with petrol and PHEV power, with a line-up of V6 and V8 engines. Handling should be even sharper than before, thanks to an Active Ride system that counters body lean.
