Netflix tips and tricks

Want to make sure you’re getting the most out of Netflix? Whether you’re a binge-watching pro or a streaming newbie, you can learn some of the hidden features with this guide

Turn off autoplay We all enjoy binge-watching, but sometimes you don’t want Netflix to actively encourage it. Turn off its autoplay feature by going to ‘Your Account > Playback Settings’ and then uncheck the ‘Play next episode automatically’ option.

Limit your data If you watch a lot of Netfix on your smartphone or tablet, you can change how much data is used at any time – ranging from around four hours per GB to an unlimited plan. To do that, head to the ‘App Settings’ section of your smartphone’s Netflix app, then make the necessary adjustments under ‘Mobile Data Usage’. Wi-fi only downloads If you want to save all of your mobile data, there’s an option in Netflix’s ‘App Settings’ to download shows only when you’re connected to wi-fi. Toggle that on, and breathe freely knowing that you won’t go over your contract’s limits.

Delete your history Just because you’ve watched something doesn’t mean you like it. You can remove those blights from your history by going to account settings and then deleting shows one by one in ‘Viewing activity’.

3D surround sound If you’ve got a Dolby Atmos speaker system or a Dolby Atmos soundbar, you’ll be able to get object-based surround sound straight from Netflix… but there’s a catch: only Microsoft’s Windows 10 app, Xbox One, Xbox One S and One X and LG’S OLED TVS from 2017 onwards support this feature. You’ll need to be on Netflix’s UHD Engage subtitles If you’re finding them difficult to read, you can change the colour and size of the text along with adding effects such as drop-shadow or a uniform border. To do this, go to ‘Account > Subtitle appearance’. The changes will apply to all compatible devices you use.

¡mira netflix en español! If English isn’t your native language or you want to have some practice getting to grips with a foreign tongue, you can change the default language in ‘Account > Language’. Bear in mind, however, that there may be a number of shows on Netflix that are not available in your chosen language.
