for four years, 61-yearold Clive has spent several days a week travelling across the country, donating his sperm to single women and couples unable to have children naturally.
He gets nothing in return, just pride when he receives news of another positive pregnancy test. To date he’s fathered 45 children, with 20 more on the way!
‘I do it purely to help people,’ says Clive, a retired teacher, who has three children with his wife. ‘It makes my wife unhappy, but it makes other people very happy.’
Cameras follow Clive as he produces a sample in the back of his van for a couple who contacted him online, before handing it over at their front door. Clive’s intentions may be good, but unregulated donor insemination has a dark side, with some donors just wanting sex. Paul has conceived more than 30 donor children, seven via natural insemination.
‘Four were single and three were in relationships,’ he says. ‘I’ve never met the husbands, I think that would be a bit awkward.’
There are also concerns about children wanting to know about their donor father in the future. But Clive doesn’t worry about the legal implications.
‘I expect to be told the baby’s been born and that, for me, is closure,’ he says. ‘I don’t think of these children as mine, I just see myself as a family friend. And what do friends do? They help each other.’
