A special episode goes back in time to expose her traumatic youth…
Tough-talking Charity recently broke down when she told girlfriend Vanessa about her past as a teenage prostitute and her rape at the hands of corrupt copper DI Mark Bails.
But, this week, in a special flashback episode, Charity is transported back to her teenage years when she first fell into the clutches of evil DI Bails, which finally shines a light on the traumatic events of her youth…
‘It’s a brilliant opportunity to explore Charity’s past and a chance to discover why Charity behaves the way she does,’ says Emma Atkins, who plays her.
Past abuse
Vanessa and village vicar Harriet both want justice for Charity. But it’s still the word of a high-ranking detective over a pub landlady with a criminal record.
Harriet is convinced that the baby Charity gave birth to years ago, who may have been Bails’ son, could be important evidence and enlists Vanessa to find out more about her child who died.
But as Vanessa probes hospital records, Charity is distracted by a familiar song on the radio that returns her to her 14-year-old self (played by Mica Proctor).
‘This has been the hardest storyline I’ve ever had due to the subject matter,’ says Emma. ‘But if it gives anyone who’s suffered abuse the strength to open up, that can only be a good thing.’
