Top of the league Steve rose to fame through BBC2’s The League of Gentlemen, a black comedy he created with Mark Gatiss, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson in 1999.

Fun in the sun He had a leading role in ITV’s hit comedy Benidorm, as Mick Garvey, husband of Janice.

Valley drama Steve starred alongside Sarah Lancashire in the first series of Happy Valley and has also appeared in Doctor Who.

Steve takes viewers back to 1976 in this week’s instalment of Urban Myths. He plays TV chat show host Bill Grundy on the day he interviewe­d the punk band Sex Pistols live on his early-evening show Today. When Bill introduces the band, saying, ‘They are as drunk as I am’, it quickly goes downhill, with band members Johnny Rotten, Glen Matlock and Steve Jones using all kinds of profanitie­s. Viewers complained in their droves and the show was soon cancelled.
