For those of you looking to bump up the summer fun at home this year, Phillip Schofield has the answers. In How to Spend It Well: House & Garden, the savvy This Morning host gives his verdict on the best summer buys, from food and drink to clever gadgets and garden essentials.

‘We did a Christmas edition last year but this time we look at everything that will hopefully complete your summer, from outdoor toys to barbecues,’ says Phillip. ‘I’m a good spender. I don’t like buying things I don’t need.’

Meanwhile, Phillip road tests some remote lawnmowers and inflatable chairs and decides whether cheap barbecues are as good as pricier ones. ‘The inflatable chairs were terrific, you’ve got a family’s worth of chairs rolled up in a drawer,’ he says. ‘I also did a barbecue cook-off using a disposable one. I went all out to win! You don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds, you get equally good results for under a tenner.’

But the presenter was rather less impressed when he tried a Grillbot, a robot that is supposed to clean the barbecue. ‘It was useless,’ he grumbles. ‘There’s nothing better for cleaning your barbecue than elbow grease!’
