Don’t get married!
Meet the brides and grooms whose relationships are tearing their families apart…
acouple’s wedding day should be the happiest day of their lives, but for Dee and John, the run-up to their wedding has been full of stress and upset.
At 59, John is 35 years older than Dee, 24, and he has yet to win the approval of Dee’s grandad, Paul.
Difficult
‘When I told him John and I were getting married, it was a difficult reaction,’ says Dee, from Hull. ‘I reassure him that John makes me happy, but he can’t see how our relationship could work.’
‘When they first got together, I wanted to go strangle him,’ says Paul of John, who’s only eight years his junior. ‘I can’t understand why Dee’s attracted to him.’ They feature in the new documentary Bride & Prejudice, along with 23-year-olds Shaaba and Jamie. Shaaba’s mum is against their marriage because Jamie is transsexual.
Meanwhile, Rob, 38, and partner Simon, 31, are just weeks away from their big day. But Rob’s parents,
Linda and Steve, still haven’t accepted that he is gay.
Scared
‘Never in our wildest dreams did we expect Rob and Simon would get married,’ admits Linda. ‘A traditional wedding for me is with a man and a woman.’ So will Rob be able to persuade them to attend?
‘Deep down I’m scared that they’re not okay with the homosexuality and how do you move on from that?’ he says. ‘I don’t know how I’d deal with it.’
