Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord bursts onto our screens for her first adventure in Sheffield…

-

It’s all change for Doctor Who, as Jodie Whittaker makes her much anticipated and exciting debut journey in the TARDIS as the first woman ever to play the Doctor. The 10-part series also has a new Sunday time slot! Jodie’s time lord literally drops into Sheffield for the first adventure where she meets bemused locals Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill) who become her new companions.

Doctor Who Sunday, 6.45pm BBC1 Drama

The Doctor gets ready to fight bad guys again when Jodie Whittaker’s newly regenerated Time Lord makes a spectacular entrance in the series opener.

Viewers got a brief glimpse of Jodie as the new female Doctor when she regenerated at the end of last year’s Christmas special and was thrown from her TARDIS into space.

The action picks up with the 13th Doctor crashing through the roof of a train in Sheffield and learning she’s now a woman…

New body

‘Regeneration comes as a bit of a shock,’ says Broadchurch star Jodie. ‘But the new Doctor is full of energy and views the world with child-like wonder.’

The Doctor soon finds herself on the tail of two terrifying aliens causing carnage, death and destruction in Sheffield. Rail passengers Graham and wife Grace are stunned to meet this mysterious woman, but they volunteer to help track down the alien monsters.

New friends

They’re joined on the mission by police officer Yasmin and Grace’s grandson Ryan, who have discovered a sinister pod outside the city…

‘Before long they’re all pals,’ explains Jodie. ‘This series is all about friendship and loyalty, so it’s like these guys are the Doctor’s new family.’

For Jodie, who’s making history as the first female Doctor in the sci-fi show’s 55-year history, Sunday’s episode will be a magical moment.

‘When I was growing up, the Doctor didn’t look like me,’ she says. ‘But it’s 2018 and heroes don’t have to tick the same boxes any more!’
