The Little Drummer Girl Sunday, 9pm BBC1 Drama
Enter the murky world of espionage in this exciting new six-part thriller. Based on a novel by John le Carré, the story starts in 1979 when actress Charlie (Florence Pugh) meets a charismatic stranger named Becker while she's on holiday.
‘Becker is with Israeli intelligence,’ says Alexander Skarsgård, who plays him. ‘They’ve been trying to infiltrate a Palestinian terrorist cell without success, but he thinks Charlie could be the perfect person for the job, even though she doesn’t know anything about espionage.’
High-stakes
After the murder of a Jewish diplomat in Berlin, Becker and his spymaster
Kurtz (Michael Shannon) hatch a plot to catch the terrorists and their ringleader, Khalil (Charif Ghattas).
They think a talented actress like
Charlie can lure Khalil into a trap, but is she ready for the most important role of her life?
‘Becker is mysterious at the start,’ explains Alexander.
‘It’s his job to make Charlie intrigued and then build trust with her. She’s feisty and political and that’s exactly what they want!’
Thrilled
For Alexander, starring in a John le Carré adaptation was a chance too good to miss, and his father, actor Stellan Skarsgård, was even more excited about the role than he was!
‘Le Carré is my dad’s favourite author,’ says Alexander. ‘He was so excited when he heard I was going to be in this. He took me out to dinner and wouldn’t stop talking about it!’
