Pregnant Sinead’s been desperate to hide the heartbreaking truth from her new husband, Daniel.
But a crisis is about to bring her secret cervical cancer diagnosis to the fore.
Having refused treatment, Sinead is at work where she passes out. Ken is aghast when he notices his new daughter-in-law being taken away in an ambulance, and travels with her to the hospital. Sinead has told Ken about her cancer and he wants to support her.
‘It’s been heartbreaking for Ken watching them,’ says William Roache, who plays him. ‘His loyalties have been totally torn. His instincts were pushing him to tell Daniel but he also wanted to honour Sinead’s feelings.’
As Sinead undergoes vital tests, in-the-dark Daniel twigs that something is wrong. His anguish compels Ken to tell his son that his wife is seriously ill.
Resentment
With the truth out there, Daniel reels as he learns his dad has known about Sinead’s cancer for a while, and that his wife has refused treatment.
Daniel pleads with Sinead to do whatever it takes to maximise her chance of survival, but his wife insists their baby must come first.
At home, Daniel explodes at Ken but Peter steps in, telling Daniel his dad was just respecting Sinead’s wishes.
‘Ken gets the full blast of resentment that Daniel has lurking because Ken was an absent father,’ says William.
Later, Sinead has a change of heart and agrees to have a mild course of chemo, much to Daniel’s relief…
