BILLY’S TRAVELLING TALES
comedian Sir Billy connolly reflects on 25 years of exploring the globe…
Sir Billy Connolly first invited viewers to join him on one of his ‘world tour’ travelogues back in 1994 – when he toured his native Scotland.
Since then, he’s been to the likes of Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. But for his latest TV excursion, he’s taking us to Florida, where he’s recently relocated after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
‘I like the weather and the fact that nobody knows me,’ explains Billy. ‘I get a degree of anonymity that makes my life simpler.’
The documentary also marks Billy’s previous exploits, with clips from his past travelogues, including dancing naked in the Orkney Islands!
‘It was a bit chilly and nerve-racking,’ recalls the 76-year-old comedian. ‘Well, not so much being naked, but being the only person naked!’
The number of countries he’s visited also means he has loads of souvenirs – something his wife Pamela isn’t too keen on.
‘I go to place them in the living room and she says, “That’s beautiful – it’d look good in your room!”’ he laughs.
‘So I’ve got a room full of rubbish!’
But all his travelling experiences have given him some top tips for packing light, although there’s one thing he always misses from home – a decent pair of shoes!
‘They’re big and heavy, so you find yourself missing shoes,’ he says. ‘And my travel essential is cotton underwear – never wear anything else or it’s torture!’
Happy… Pamela and Billy have been wed for nearly 30 years
