CRY BABY!
How science can help us deal with toddler tantrums…
Every parent has had to cope with toddler tantrums, but this final episode of Babies: Their
Wonderful World may help them breathe a collective sigh of relief as advances in science show us how best to deal with them.
Using a special suit that measures heart rate and sweat, we see how babies react during a tantrum and which parenting techniques help to calm them down!
‘Tantrums are absolutely normal,’ says paediatrician
Guddi Singh, who presents the series. ‘But what’s interesting is seeing how different techniques result in different ends.
‘Now we can actually say, “This is the best way to handle tantrums.”’
Major milestones
During the programme, we also discover when babies develop memory and learn to cooperate with others. We also learn why crawling is such an important milestone.
The scientists also find out whether it’s a good idea to speak to babies in a silly voice, and we learn why they’re better at learning languages than adults.
‘We’ve made amazing discoveries,’ says Guddi. ‘And have new insights into babies’ bodies and minds.
‘We’ve seen that the first two years are perhaps the most important we’ll ever experience and actually lay the foundations for who we’ll become.’
