Death on the Tyne

Sian Gibson reunites with Johnny Vegas for a comedy murder mystery set on a cruise ship…

-

Acruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam takes a murderous turn in Christmas Gold’s comedy whodunit Death on the Tyne.

It’s a sequel to last year’s Murder on the Blackpool Express, which saw coach driver Terry (Johnny Vegas) and tour guide Gemma (Sian Gibson) leading a deadly trip.

This time, they reunite with chirpy pensioner Mildred (Sheila Reid) to take her and her pals, caustic Colleen (Sue Johnston) and confused Hilda (Georgie Glen), to Holland.

But on board, a serial killer disguised as the ship’s mascot, Dippy the Dolphin, takes out victims in outlandish ways, from a beating with a bottle of Jane McDonald’s perfume to a corkscrew in the head!

Proposal?

‘It feels claustrophobic because they are stuck on the ship,’ says Sian. ‘The killer could be anyone, and we didn’t realise how brutal it is!’

The crimes cast a shadow over Gemma and Terry’s burgeoning romance, as Terry is desperate to propose.

‘They are properly together now,’ says

Sian. ‘In the first one, when he solved the case she got a twinkle in her eye for him, so now someone being murdered again has brought that excitement back. She fancies him when he is solving crimes!’

Sian was thrilled to work with the new cast, which also includes James Fleet as Jack, the ship’s suave captain, Felicity Montagu as cruise director Denise, and Doon Mackichan as self-centred singer Emily.

‘I got very starstruck,’ says Sian. ‘But there were no egos. Everyone had the right attitude of having fun and not taking it seriously.

It was a joy.’
