The Death in Paradise team are back for more Caribbean crime-solving…
The weather may be cold and dark right now, but this week there’s a ray of sunshine as Death in Paradise returns! Ardal O’Hanlon, who plays DI Jack Mooney, promises another batch of cases to unravel from the fictional island of Saint Marie.
‘There will be the occasional murder this series, it’s our speciality!’ he laughs. ‘In the first episode the murder takes place on a bus. There were only four people on there and
nobody left their seat, so which one of them did it and how?
‘Next week it’s murder at the zoo. I filmed a scene interviewing a monkey – everyone is a suspect!’
A new face
While much of this series will feel familiar, one person will be missing: original cast member Danny John-Jules, aka laid-back Officer Dwayne Myers, who left the show to compete in Strictly. He’ll be replaced by
Shyko Amos, who plays the Commissioner’s niece, Ruby Patterson.
‘She’s an amazing, slightly cartoonish character who brings lots of fun, energy and comedy to the show,’ reveals Ardal. ‘You always wonder what will happen when someone leaves, but the series seems to survive cast changes, so there won’t be any radical differences.’
As for Ardal’s character, Jack, his daughter has left Saint-Marie to go to university, and some viewers are hoping he might embark on a romance with bar owner Catherine…
More than friends?
‘Jack’s more integrated into the community now, he knows how the island ticks, and he’s no longer a fish out of water,’ says Ardal.
‘As for his relationship with Catherine, I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think they’re just good friends. You never know what’s going to happen on this show, though – Jack could get together with Commissioner
Patterson!’
