Jean Valjean comes to rescue Fantine’s daughter…
While poor Fantine has faced prostitution, poverty and illness, her beloved daughter, Cosette, hasn’t led the charmed life her mother was promised when she put her in the care of the Thénardiers.
But this week, heroic Jean Valjean confronts the Thénardiers and tries to take the little girl away from them. But the greedy innkeepers won’t let her go without a fight… or a tidy sum!
‘There’s a sinister quality about them. Some of their antics to earn money are extreme,’ says Adeel Akhtar, who stars as Monsieur Thénardier with Olivia Colman as his wife. ‘They’ll take any way to make a franc.’
But Adeel insists they’re not all bad. ‘People aren’t evil, circumstances push them to do awful things,’ he adds. ‘There’s humour to these characters. Olivia and I enjoyed finding the comedy.’
