Superstar footballers and grassroots players open up to Prince William about their mental health…
Prince William is passionate about getting people, especially men, to open up about their mental health issues. So for this BBC1 documentary, cameras follow him for 12 months as he examines men’s mental health through the prism of football, meeting players, managers and fans to discuss it.
‘Imagine if we talked about mental health as much as we talk about football,’ says William. ‘We’ve got to be able to be more open and able to talk about stuff that matters.’
William meets former England goalkeeper Joe Hart as he discusses coping with a public decline in his career, and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who says, as a player, he was ‘stuck in the Stone Age’ about mental health.
Meanwhile, England and Aston
Villa’s Tyrone Mings reveals how he spent months in a homeless shelter while growing up and has even worked with a psychologist. ‘My thoughts spiralled out of control,’ says Tyrone. ‘I’ve been in a lot of unfavourable situations growing up, so I know what it’s like to need help.’
William also meets up with a group of bereaved fathers in Northamptonshire, who have joined Sands United FC, a series of football teams across the country set up by the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity as a way for dads to come together and talk about grief. ‘It’s sending a very good message,’ says William. ‘It’s about feeling confident enough to say, “Things aren’t great”. It’s OK to not be OK.’
