Matthew (Matthew Goode) and Diana (Teresa Palmer) are hiding in the treacherous world of Elizabethan London as the new series kicks off. But with enemies everywhere, they must find a powerful witch to help Diana master her magic.

Sheila Hancock and James

Purefoy join the cast.

Star-crossed lovers Dr Diana Bishop, a witch, and vampire Matthew are still on the run from the all-powerful Congregation (a council of non-human creatures), as the second series of A Discovery of Witches begins.

To keep themselves from danger and find the elusive Book of Life before the Congregation do, Diana and Matthew (Matthew Goode) are hiding out in the past, as they time travel back to Elizabethan London and Matthew’s home in 1590!

Dangerous

‘Diana’s a historian so she’s familiar with 1590 and it’s enthralling to be there,’ says Teresa Palmer, who plays

Diana. ‘But being thrust back so many years is also incredibly challenging.’

Luckily the pair have friends in high places, including Queen Elizabeth I and playwright Christopher Marlowe (Tom Hughes). Meanwhile, Sheila Hancock joins the cast as Goody Alsop, a wise witch who gives Diana valuable magic lessons.

What doesn’t bode well is the arrival of Philippe (James Purefoy), Matthew’s stepfather, who’s the founder of the Congregation!

‘Matthew shifts into a darker version of himself,’ says Teresa. ‘He becomes broody and dangerous, and Diana has to get to know this other side of him.’
