Fairy school terror!
Join fairies-in-training at a magical school full of dangers
Fate: The Winx Saga
Available: Friday 22 January Genre: Fantasy drama Season: 1 Episodes: 6 Runs: 45min
Move over, Hogwarts – there’s a new magical school arriving on Netflix! Called Alfea, it’s a boarding school for fairies learning to harness their magic and it’s newly attended by Bloom, a fire fairy raised by humans who only discovers magic when an accident reveals her true powers. She soon realises her unique magic could actually be dangerous!
In her first week at Alfea, Bloom meets other young fairies – Aisha, Stella, Terra and Musa – all with different powers, plus hunky teen lads Riven, Dane and Sky, who are non-magical ‘warriors’ training in combat and weaponry. Like any school, however, there are the usual teenage love woes, bullying and dangerous rivalries.
Mystery monsters
‘It’s not just the “cool girl” hanging out with the “cool girls”,’ says Chilling
Adventures of Sabrina star Abigail Cowen, who plays Bloom. ‘It’s people with different stories, interests and experiences.’
There are terrors at the school, too, as mystery monsters are on the loose.
Look out for Eve Best as headmistress Farah
Dowling and Robert
James-collier as martial-arts master Saúl Silva, plus Lesley Sharp as a mysterious character.
The cast spent six months on location in Ireland to film this series…
‘Usually, at weekends, we’d go to one of our apartments and hang out, to just bond,’ says Abigail. ‘It was like college.’
Abigail reckons her upbringing on a Florida farm helped her to play headstrong Bloom, especially when fighting monsters. ‘We’re taught at a young age how to combat alligators. Like, that’s what you’re learning at school,’ she recalls. ‘Nothing’s really a coincidence when it comes to roles that work out, I think – you are connected to it for a reason.’
