A lasting legacy?
What has been the impact of recent events in the USA on British society?
Has George Floyd Changed Britain?
The death of 46-year-old George Floyd while under arrest by US police last year sparked outrage and triggered civil-rights protests around the world as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.
On the eve of the anniversary of Floyd’s death, with police officer Derek Chauvin having been found guilty of murder, a new ITV documentary presented by Sir Trevor Mcdonald and Charlene White examines the legacy of George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement on the UK.
‘It started conversations across a lot of the top industries and institutions in this country,’ explains newsreader Charlene. ‘But did they continue, and what impact, if any, did they have?’
In search of answers, Charlene and Sir Trevor investigate the impact in areas such as health and education, and speak to high-profile black figures from the worlds of sport and entertainment.
‘We’ve got [ex-footballer] John Barnes, who discusses the lack of black managers in the game,’ says
Charlene. ‘And
British athlete
Bianca Williams, who made headlines when she was stopped, searched and handcuffed by police, with her three-month-old son in the car.’
Charlene also hears from singer Alexandra Burke, who speaks out about her experience of racism in the music industry.
There were also some positive stories, Charlene reveals.
‘Trevor goes to visit a school that’s changed part of its history curriculum as a result of what has happened. That was important, because it’s something that’s changed in the last year.’
