Mending a friend!

The Repair Shop returns and the team fix a very special ceramic bulldog for his blind owner…

-

Ever since Nigel Garry went blind at 19 he’s been drawn to objects that are particularly tactile.

So when he felt a ceramic bulldog that doubled up as a drinks tray in a shop several years ago, he knew straight away he just had to buy him.

Treasured find

‘He’s called Boozy Bulldog Barman and he’s absolutely wonderful,’ explains Nigel. ‘I had perfect sight and then I developed a condition called optic neuritis and my sight went overnight.

‘Since then, I’ve loved things that are very tactile. He’s got a lovely texture.’

Sadly, however, Boozy was damaged during a house move, leaving him with a broken ear and a large crack down his arm, meaning The Repair Shop’s ceramics restorer Kirsten Ramsay has the difficult task of bringing him back to his former glory.

It’s not easy because Boozy must feel the same as Nigel remembers him.

Also this week, a pair of faded athletics spikes are restored for 90-year-old Neil Scott, and a badly peeling portrait gets a makeover for its owner, Sophy Bellis. Meanwhile, Nigel is brought to tears when he’s reunited with his faithful friend.

‘He’s got his ear back on!’ he says. ‘He brings so much pleasure to my life, I can’t wait to get him home!’
