Eps: 8 (first two episodes from 2 September, then weekly) I t’s time to head back to Middle-earth, with its elves, dwarves and dark legends all coming together again in a prequel series set thousands of years before the Lord of the Rings saga created by legendary author JRR Tolkien.

This mega-budget eight-part series tells the story of the forging of those famous rings, the rise and fall of kingdoms and an epic battle against the evil Sauron. It starts with elven warrior

Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) travelling to the icy north to search for signs of the Dark Lord, in the hope of avenging her brother, whom Sauron killed.

Epic adventure

‘Galadriel is a legend,’ says Morfydd of the elf character played by Cate Blanchett in the hit movie trilogy. ‘Elves live for thousands of years, and Galadriel is very old, but not as old as we’ve previously seen her, so don’t expect the same character you meet later on!’

Summoned to return home from her hunt by the High King of the Elves, Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker), Galadriel meets her old elven friend Elrond, who advises her to forget her quest, yet is concerned by her fears. ‘The story starts at a time of relative peace, and every character looks at that differently,’ says Robert Aramayo, who plays him. ‘Elrond is curious about what’s going on in the world, yet he’s also hopeful.’

Elsewhere, a group of Harfoots – a breed of hobbit – are concerned by the arrival of a stranger, with their leader Sadoc Burrows (Sir Lenny Henry) warning youngster Nori Brandyfoot not to stray too far. ‘Nori is pretty adventurous,’ says Markella Kavenagh, who plays her. ‘She believes fear of risk can be greater than the risk itself.’
