Griff Rhys Jones heads to Ontario to uncover what makes Canadians tick…

-

This week, as Griff Rhys Jones’ tour of Canada continues, the star’s keen to learn more about the complex relationship between Canadians and Americans.

‘I thought the fact that Canadians don’t want to be mistaken for Americans was a myth,’ says Griff. ‘But it’s true!’

The third leg of his trip sees him head to Ontario province, which borders the US, and he begins at Niagara Falls, where, after seeing the epic natural wonder, he explores the party-loving town, which is full of American-style casinos and diners.

‘It’s a playground with something for everyone,’ he says. ‘The casinos want you to come and eat candy, drink beer and lose all your money.’

Griff then heads to the stunning city of Toronto, and finds out about its bustling film industry. Countless blockbusters from X-men to Suicide Squad have been made in the area, and Toronto has often doubled up for the likes of New York City.

‘Maybe Canadian modesty stops us knowing that this city is the Hollywood of the north,’ says Griff. ‘Toronto has cheaper production costs, more attractive suburbs and soaring skylines, so it takes regular roles in American films.’

But to get a sense of the real Canada, Griff then travels further north to the Algonquin Provincial Park, where he teams up with a wilderness instructor to camp out in the woods, and he even spots an elusive Canadian beaver.

‘That was so exciting,’ he enthuses. ‘I think inside every Canadian is a backwoods figure struggling to get out.

It’s about freedom.’
