Concert of hope

Line of Duty’s Vicky Mcclure is back with her choir for a huge festival…

-

There were strong emotions and tears in 2019 when we first watched Vicky Mcclure, star of top dramas Line of Duty and Trigger Point, introduce us to her inspirational choir for people with dementia.

Vicky’s gran was diagnosed with vascular dementia at 75, living with the disease until her death in 2015. To honour her memory, Vicky joined medical specialists, music therapists and performingarts volunteers to form a special choir of 20 singers, all living with various stages of dementia.

Butterflies

Now, three years later, Vicky’s back for a follow-up as she prepares for the choir to perform at the Splendour Festival, a live event in her home city of Nottingham featuring stars such as Craig David, The Human League, AnneMarie and Supergrass. Vicky enlists pop star Tom Grennan to sing with the choir. But she admits to having butterflies as the big day draws near. ‘There are definite nerves and excitement all at the same time,’ says Vicky. ‘But I’m sure the choir will take it in their stride and smash it. And having Tom join us on stage will be extra special.’ Meanwhile, Vicky, who’s an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society, is determined to use the power of music to help those with dementia. ‘Music can uplift people living with dementia and bring them joy,’ she says. ‘That’s why I started Our Dementia Choir and why it’s so close to my heart.’
