Libby Squire and her mum Lisa were so close that before Libby went off to the University of Hull, Lisa couldn’t even talk about her little girl leaving home.
‘I kept crying,’ says Lisa. ‘I was so proud of her and wanted her to go and have that experience, but I wanted to keep her at home.’
Libby, 21, loved life at university, but on 31 January 2019, she was refused entry to a nightclub for being too drunk and she never made it home.
With access to Lisa, Libby’s friends and those involved in the investigation, this three-part documentary charts Libby’s disappearance and the massive manhunt that ensued.
‘It was horrendous, and I felt sick,’ recalls Lisa of the moment she was told Libby was missing. ‘It was so out of character for her.’
After making door-to-door enquiries, following up possible sightings, searching the area and trawling through hours of CCTV footage, the police discovered that Libby had got into a silver Vauxhall Astra car.
This, in turn, led them to Polish butcher Pawel Relowicz, who, despite being a family man with two children, was later found to have carried out other sexually motivated crimes.
Libby’s body was recovered from the River Hull seven weeks after she’d disappeared. Relowicz was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 27 years.
‘When I saw the CCTV footage, I wanted to reach into that car and say, “No, don’t get in that car,”’ says Lisa. ‘She was picked up by a sexual predator. It’s stomach churning.’
