God save the KING!
A look at the life of new monarch Charles III…
CHARLES: OUR NEW KING Wednesday, 9pm, ITV Factual
At 73, King Charles III became the oldest monarch to ascend to the British throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September.
With Charles turning 74 on 14 November, a new ITV documentary looks at the man behind the monarch from his birth and childhood through to his long tenure as the Prince of Wales. There are insights from his close friends, those who’ve worked with him in his younger years, as well as those who are involved with the causes he feels passionate about.
Charles was born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948 and aged four attended the coronation of his mother on 2 June 1953.
Cherished causes
After going to Gordonstoun school in Scotland, Charles went to Cambridge. He was invested as Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle on
1 July 1969, aged 20, then served in the Royal Navy during the 1970s.
As well as charting his journey from child to adult, the programme also looks at how Charles has tackled the issues he feels strongly about, including founding the Prince’s Trust in 1976 to help young people and speaking out on the environment.
‘Humanity faces many threats,’ he says. ‘But none is greater than climate change.’ Now, as King, Charles will cut back on campaigning and embrace the role of monarch, with wife Camilla, Queen Consort, by his side. ‘I am deeply aware of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty that have now passed to me,’ he’s said. ‘I shall strive to follow the shining example I have been set.’
