The remaining bakers compete in this year’s final, with epic challenges set by Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith. They’ll be creating an elegant summer picnic with small cakes, veggie pies and their own bread for sarnies, then for the Showstoppe­r they must impress with an edible planet sculpture. Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas are on hand to observe the fun and reveal the winner.

Paul admits he was blown away by their efforts.

‘Flavour has been king this series, and that became apparent in the final,’ he explains. ‘The baking was exceptiona­l. They were very polished and have learnt so much from their journey in the tent and the finished articles were stunning creations. It was difficult to judge!’

Another highlight for Paul and Dame Prue is the arrival of the finalists’ friends and families, who lend support when the winner is revealed.

‘It’s lovely to meet the families,’ says Paul. ‘Everybody piles into the tent after we announce the winner – it’s mayhem but cute to see their reactions, and they all try to get a picture!’
