WAGS at war!
A new two-part documentary takes a look at the court battle between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney…
In October 2019, the nation was gripped when Coleen Rooney, wife of footballer Wayne, claimed on social media that stories about her leaked to The Sun had come from the account of Rebekah Vardy, wife of Leicester City player Jamie.
Coleen was dubbed Wagatha Christie, after setting up a sting operation to learn who’d been selling information about her, but Rebekah denied the allegations.
As Wayne and Jamie had played together for England, and their highprofile wives had once been friends, the saga dominated the headlines.
Rebekah sued Coleen for libel and this two-part documentary follows the court battle that took place this May, with the first episode telling Rebekah’s story and the second Coleen’s, although Coleen chose not to participate.
Guilty verdict
‘I cried. I couldn’t understand why someone would do that, knowing the impact’ says Rebekah, explaining why she sued Coleen. ‘To weaponise a fan base against an individual without communicating with them first, there’s no way I’d inflict that pain on anyone.’
The documentary delves into the WAGS’ lives and unpicks the court case, with interviews from legal teams, friends and journalists.
It details how, in court, Rebekah was shown to have sold other stories to the press, through her agent Caroline Watt. The judge ruled in Coleen’s favour but Rebekah still denies everything.
‘I had in no way, shape or form anything to do with those stories getting into The Sun,’ she says. ‘Never in a million years did I think the outcome would be what it was.’
