A Spy among Friends, starring Damian Lewis and
Guy Pearce, reveals the true story of British spy Kim Philby working for the KGB.
The Confessions of Frannie Langton, meanwhile, is a period drama starring Karla-simone Spence as Frannie, who was born into slavery and is caught up in a murder mystery in a Mayfair mansion. There’s also feature-length comedy
Plebs: Soldiers of Rome, and teen relationship drama Tell Me
Everything.
This Thursday, ITVX launches a host of exciting new dramas, comedies and documentaries. The streaming service, which has replaced ITV Hub, will premiere shows months before they air on ITV1 and will also feature classic films and series.
Kicking off the brand-new content is six-part espionage drama A Spy among Friends, which explores infamous spy Kim Philby’s defection to Moscow in 1963.
The series looks at the close friendship between Kim (Guy Pearce) and fellow MI6 officer Nicholas Elliott (Damian Lewis), who was left reeling after learning Kim had been a double agent for almost 30 years.
‘That level of betrayal is damaging,’ says Damian. ‘It was long-lasting and lethal.’
Nicholas is questioned by MI5 officer Lily Thomas (Anna Maxwell Martin) to determine whether he’s also a traitor, but they later collaborate.
‘Lily has preconceptions,’ explains Damian. ‘But they develop a friendship.’
